Bangkok - Thai's capital - is a city that display 30,000 lavish temples and a great variety of colorful architecture. The place to start is Ratanakosin, the royal island where the city's most important sights are to be found. On the edges of this enclave, the area around the landmark Democracy Monument includes some religious architecture, a contrast with the attractions of neighboring Chinatown. Downtown Bangkok, by comparison, which can take an hour to reach by bus from Ratanakosin, offers the best shops, bars, restaurant and nightlife. For experience, head for the Chao Phraya River, which is the backbone of a network of canals and floating markets.
